The main feature of the range is the 6X carbon fiber tube, made of a unique structure of 6 crossed layers, that maximizes rigidity, vibration absorption, and lightweight performance. 6X tubes have a high density structure made of top quality ultra-thin carbon fibers (7m or 0.007 mm). Built-in Anti Leg Rotation is now a feature of the whole carbon fiber range. I use this tripod for amateur DSLR photography. I absolutely love this product. It is light to carry, easy to use, very steady and beautiful.
Price is probably the only thing I can complain, and it doesn't include a tripod head yet. The whole investment can cause more than some entry-level DSLRs. But if you can afford Gitzo's products, then you will not regret with their quality.
GT2540 is one of the latest tripod from Gitzo, which is made of the latest 6X carbon fiber tube. Carbon fiber is a strong and durable material, and it is lighter than basalt and aluminum. The 6X carbon fiber tube is also lighter than Gitzo's old carbon fiber tube. The tube's thickness is reduced from 1.5mm to 1.0mm (33%), without losing rigidity or weight support capacity. The tripod is made in Italy.
Gitzo recommends this tripod for lightweight camcorders, spotting scopes and DSLRs with 200mm lenses, up to a 300mm maximum. This means that this tripod is not designed for heavy weight equipments, such as bird photography with a 500mm lens.
The tripod comes in a nice box.

UPDATE:
GT1540 is a good choice, too. It is lighter, but the bottom leg of GT1540 is slimmer than GT2540, so it's less strong. GT2540's bottom leg is already very slim, so GT1540 can be as slim as a straw.
Other features:
- G-Lock leg locking system (provide rigidity, fast, strong and safe locking)
- rapid column (reversible and removable, allow alternative shooting angle or low level macro work)
- Anti Leg Rotation system (the tripod can be opened in less than 15
seconds)
- hook (located at the bottom of the tripod center column, can hold up to 39.7 lbs/18 kg)
- removable rubber feet (for changing worn out rubber feet or to fit other accessories)
Gitzo offers a wide range of tripod heads and other accessories, which can give tripods more flexibility.
